Effect of the Life style and oral health behavior of elderly people on the colony forming units of mutans streptococci, Lactobacillus, candida albicans

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the total number of CFUs of microbial factors, such as mutans streptococci, lactobacillus and candida albicans, by the life style and oral health condition of elderly people.
Methods: The cluster sampling was applied to the subjects of 60 elderly people aged sixty-five years or older of an asylum and 3 social welfare facilities. By oral examinations and questionnaire survey, the following results were obtained.
Results: The number of toothbrushing and toothbrushing or denturebmshing after between-meals were recognized as significant variables concerning oral healthcare for mutans streptococci CFUs by logistic regression analysis. Method of toothbrushing and toothbrushing or denturebrushing after snack were recognized as significant variables concerning oral healthcare for lactobacillus CFUs by logistic regression analysis. Convenience of using denture were recognized as significant variables concerning oral healthcare for candida albicans CFUs by logistic regression analysis.
Conclusions: As a general and health-related conclusion of the research, it is necessary to develop the incremental oral health care program for oral health promotion in the elderly people.
